Polar Skills Course

Live, work and study safely in the Poles - camping, navigation and travel skills from expert trainers...

Course for your organisation:

  • We run these course for groups and organisations.
  • If you are interested in this course please get in touch to discuss booking a course for your group.
  • If you are an individual looking for this training do get in touch - we may be able to put together open courses where there is demand or find you places on our in-house courses.

  • The Poles, North and South, are not only as far apart as you can possibly be on earth, they also offer entirely different experiences.

While the North Pole offers pack ice, polar bears and leads of open water, Antarctica offers other challenges - on the South Pole plateau, 3000 metres above sea level, the body can experience the effects of altitude and extreme windchill.

Polar environments are beautiful, fascinating and dramatic, but are also serious and committing locations in which to find yourself without adequate training and preparation!

Who is the course suitable for?

    • Researchers or adventure travellers planning trips in the polar regions.
    • Leaders or outdoor instructors with plans or aspirations to lead expeditions in these regions.
    • Teachers going on expeditions to polar destinations who want to feel informed and confident in the environment.
    • Anyone who would like to understand and appreciate more about the diversity within these differing polar environments.

The essentials to ensure an enjoyable and safe expedition to the polar regions:

This course covers more than just experiences at the Poles themselves - the polar regions cover vast extents of our planet. Our course covers a range of issues, including polar expedition preparation, safety and emergency survival, learning to 'read' the landscape, equipment including communication, polar routines and tips…and answers the question everyone is intrigued to know 'how do you go to the toilet when it's so cold?!'

    Course leader: Helen Turton:

Helen is a qualified teacher, who has worked in the outdoor industry for over 20 years, in outdoor centres, as an outdoor education advisor, and leading on expeditions around the world, from the Falkland Islands and South Georgia to Svalbard. She also brings a wealth of personal experience, having worked with groups with complex medical and physical needs and learning difficulties in a variety of environmental and expedition situations. She holds a Winter ML certifcate, and is also a First Aid trainer.

    Helen Turton polar expedition expert

Her real passion is for taking part in polar ski touring and training trips, including full distance to the South Pole, crossing Greenland, touring over Svalbard, and skiing the last degree to both the South Pole and North Poles several times. In fact, she loves nothing better than living a self-sufficient lifestyle out of a pulk (sledge) in cold climates, and for sharing the experiences and skills learnt on these trips with others.

Through events such as the Fieldskills polar training event, she hopes to share her personal and often humorous experiences from her wilderness explorations, inspiring, encouraging and motivating others to believe in their dreams, and 'get out there and make them happen' whatever they might be!
